She made glass flowers

Living in the So Uk housing estate of Hong Kong, everyone in the family had to work to make ends meet. One such job was wiring together glass flowers in the confines of the small flat for export to 'rich' people in foreign countries. When the family immigrated to Australia in the 1970s, one of the few possessions they bought with them was one such artificial plant.

Today Poyin (my mother) resides in Sydney with her beloved bird. Although she now tends to her 'real' flowers on a daily basis, the glass flowers remain on the shelf as a reminder of the past.
